Boys Basketball!!

Boys varsity basketball team traveled to Dixie on Tuesday and came away with its first league loss of the season. The Greyhounds came out determined to pull off an upset and started the game off with a 6-0 run. Early foul trouble haunted the Spartans in the first half along with not executing well on the defensive end. The Spartans went into halftime down 30-24 but came out of the locker room and put together 19-8 spurt in the 3rd quarter to lead at the end of the 3rd quarter by a score of 43-38. The 4th quarter did not go as planned as the Spartans let a 9 point lead in the 4th go away and lose on a buzzer beater for a score of 57-55. The Spartans were led in scoring by Victor Boggs with 16, followed by Eli Rains 14, Steven Jeffries 8, Luke Creditt 7, Ty Black 6, Jake Elton and Tyler Ledford both with 2. The Spartans will be back in action on Friday night as they host the Oakwood Lumberjacks. Saturday the Spartans will travel to Bellbrook for an all-day girls and boys day of basketball. The varsity boys will play at 6:00. The Spartans are now 10-2 and 6-1 in league. Come out and support the teams as all 3 teams strive to win the league at all 3 levels.

The Freshman Boys had a great TEAM victory on Tuesday night. The Spartans travelled to Dixie for 38-29 conference win. Getting scoring from 10 of the 12 players the Spartans built a solid lead and kept up the defensive pressure the entire game. The boys held the Greyhounds to only four 2 point field goals the entire game and forced them into taking many deep 3 pointers. The Spartans were led in scoring by Mitch Sexton with 10 points, Justin Fowler with 6 points and Josiah Parrish with 5 points. The Spartans are now 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the league. The boys have a home game this Friday against Oakwood and Saturday at Bellbrook.

Reserve - WHS 49 Dixie 43

The Spartans went on the road to face the Greyhounds of Dixie this Tuesday. Waynesville came out with great defensive pressure allowing two points in the 1st quarter and scoring 21. The Spartans put the game in cruise control a little too early allowing Dixie to come within 10 at the end of the third. The Spartans would end up pulling the game out 49 - 43 putting the team 11-1 overall, and 7-0 in conference. Waynesville was led by Connor Caldwell with 12, Brian Behymer with 11, and Mitch Gossard adding 9.

At cheerleading competitions, there is no consideration regarding the size of your school, therefore the girls are often going up against schools that are much bigger than us. They are doing a great job. The peewee competition squad participated as well – winning third place out of six. They beat Kettering, Bellbrook, and Franklin and lost only to Centerville and Miamisburg! Great Job Ladies – Waynesville Cheerleaders grades 3-12 represent our community very well and we are proud of the girls’ accomplishments!

Middle School Football Update

The Middle School teams were back in action this week after a lay-off due to weather concerns and on Tuesday, the 7th graders took on Middletown Christian.  The team played extremely well and has improved greatly this year in all aspects.  The team got back in the win column by defeating the visiting Eagles by a score of 26-12.  Scoring was led by Dagan Stiles with 2 scores, Hunter Brown scored on a 45 yard pass from Stiles and Jacob Hobbs also accounted for a touchdown.  Off course, all of this scoring could not happen without the offensive line that includes Jimmy Plummer, Blake Hankins, Gavin Linkous, Zane Kohler, John Henz, Chaston Armstrong and Chris Bradley and running backs, Luke Moore and Kevin Savage. The receivers have important roles in block and they include Michael Good, Sean Durham, Alex Williams, Cory Kilburn and Kyle Mannix.
Defensive standouts this year were BIG Sam Denier, Micah Schenking, Owen Longstreath, Brandon Fowler, Brian Blair, and David Crossgrove.
Seventh graders took on Preble Shawnee on Wednesday and lost a hard fought battle 14-8 to end the season at 4 wins, 4 losses.  Two of the losses were only by 6 points or less, so there is a bright future ahead when they play next year.

8th Graders took on a 1 loss Preble Shawnee team that was vying for a piece of the league championship.  Going into this game, the mighty Spartans had already secured a piece of the league title and was looking to win outright.  A hard fought first half left both teams scoreless and it came down to the second half to determine the outcome.  Waynesville scored first and missed the 2 point conversion to make the score 6-0.  Preble followed up later and converted to make the score 8-6.  The final minutes of the 4th quarter proved to be the most exciting all year as once again, Preble scored and the defense held the Arrows out of the end zone for the conversion to make the score 14-8.  Waynesville needed a score and a conversion to win it and had opportunities to make it happen, but it was not meant to be as the Preble defense held tight.  What a memorable game for our team and it will continue in their offseason commitment to get even better.

The Middle School Spartan Pride, Hustle and Desire Awards were awarded to Dagan Stiles and Michael Good for the 7th grade team and Eli Elton and John McCloud represented the 8th graders.

Lady Golfer Rachel Johnson Qualifies for Districts: Team Takes 5th in Sectionals!!!
On Tuesday, the girls’ golf team traveled to the Hamilton Elks Country Club for the Div. II Southwest Sectionals. Taking on very tough opponents, mostly from the Cincinnati area, and on a very difficult golf course which contained thick, tall rough due to the heavy rains, the Lady Spartans took 5th overall and missed qualifying for the districts by only 11 strokes. While losing to McNicholas, Indian Hill, Cin. Country Day and Wyoming, the Spartans were able to out shoot teams like Clinton Massie, Valley View, Fenwick, Mariemont, Hamilton Badin and Taylor. The good news was that Rachel Johnson was able to qualify for the Districts as an individual by shooting a round of 101, and finished second among the individual qualifiers. Rachel will move on to the District Tournament played at Pipestone Golf Course next Wednesday. Also shooting an excellent round and finishing in 17th place out of 60 golfers, was Briana James who finished with a 112. Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans were Kaitlyn Boggs and Katie Storer who both shot a 122. Tori Peters finished her year by shooting a strong final nine as well. The girls finished the season with a 12-12 record. Congratulation to the team and Coach York on a fine season and Good Luck to Rachel in the Districts next week!!!

Waynesville Football stays Undefeated!!!!!

The Waynesville Varsity football team beat the defending champs Carlisle in a double overtime thriller. Carlisle went for a two point conversion to win the game in the second overtime and the pass was deflected by Michael Vogel and Ty Black to preserve the victory. The first half was tied 7 to 7 and the second half was a thrilling back and forth battle. The Spartans seemed to be in the driver’s seat with 2:03 remaining in the game when they went up 35-27- but the Indians used a short kickoff and a few plays to come within a 2-point conversion of tying the game. The Spartans held on the first attempt but a flag from the officials gave the Indians a 2nd attempt which they made good on and the game went into overtime tied at 35. Both teams scored and made good on their conversions in the 1st OT and the Spartans got the ball first in the 2nd OT to try and put the pressure. One play was all it took as Luke Creditt hit Matt Hussey on a short pass and Hussey did the rest taking it in for the quick Spartan score. Caleb Keeton nailed the PAT and the Spartans now led 49-42. Carlisle went to work and drove inside the 10 yard line before punching it in to come within a point of sending the game into a triple overtime. However, sensing a chance for the win and showing confidence in their offense, the Indians decided to go for the win and lined up for a 2-pt. attempt. This time the Spartans were not going to be surprised and Vogel and Black teamed up to seal the victory 49-48 in front of a stunned Indians home crowd. Matt Lindsey led the Spartans in rushing with 73 yards and a score while Creditt added 4 more scores on his 63 yards on the ground. Creditt showed signs of breaking out of his passing slump as he connected on 17 of 24 attempts for 289 yards and 2 more scores, both to Hussey who finished with 4 catches for 73 yards.. Black not only made plays defensively but had 5 catches for 126 yds.

Defensively the Spartans bent more than they had in previous games but still made the key plays when they needed to. Middle School Football Update

The 7th grade football team took on the Northridge Polar Bears Thursday night, and sent them packing back to the north, with a 24-18 loss. The Spartan ground attack opened up the scoring with a touchdown by Kevin Savage, who scored on an 8 yard sweep play to take the lead 6-0. The Polar Bears struck back on the very next play with a 65 yard gallop to immediately tie the game. Waynesville relied heavily on the triple-option run series and chewed up chunks of yardage with fullbacks Jacob Hobbs and Luke Moore sharing the duties. It was only a matter of time that soon, Quarterback Dagan Stiles would ride the fullback deep into the line of scrimmage, pull the ball and take off on the second part of the triple-option series. Stiles and Savage would end up with two touchdowns in the contest that ended 24-18, Waynesville. The 7th grade record stands at 2 wins, 1 loss.

The 8th graders had a huge defensive game that included a goal line stand from the 1 yard line. Big Eli Elton, Cole Phillips, Garret Schroeder and George Ryan lead the defensive line charge that stuffed the inside running game of the Bears while Caleb Davis, Ramsey Skeens and the rest of the linebacker corps ran down the swift outside runs. Scoring for the Spartans was James Morse, Brandon Young, who added 2 touchdowns and a two point conversion to make the final 22-6. The 8th grade record stands at 3 wins, 1 loss and travel to Milton

MS Volleyball has a tough week:
Both the 7th and 8th grade teams took on Bellbrook this week on Tuesday and both resulted in losses. The 7th grade team stretched it out to 3 games with a 2 to 7 point spread on all 3 games. The 8th grade team ended in two games but they played some really tough ball and it was obvious that the Spartans played more 3 ball volleyball and received more bang balls. However when Bellbrook was able to set up correctly they nailed some awesome hits at the girls. These are the games they need to be playing at in order to improve. The girls are definitely performing at a high level of volleyball and the results of their matches are not indicative of their performances. Keep it up girls! It will pay off!!
